For the second week in a row, the Selaparang Circuit in Lombok, Indonesia, hosted a round of the FIM MXGP Championship. The course, however, was running in the opposite direction from the previous weekend’s race, but the heat and humidity remained. The race also had two new overall winners: Jeffrey Herlings in MXGP and Lucas Coenen in MX2.
Herlings, on the Red Bull KTM, won both MXGP motos with room to spare. The former champ took the checkers seven seconds ahead of points leader Tim Gajser (Honda) in the first moto and six seconds in the second moto. It was Herling’s 105th career Grand Prix win, and it moves him a little closer to Jorge Prado (GasGas) in the championship standings. Prado is holding down second and Herlings is 17 points back in third. Gajser, however, still has a comfortable lead with 608 points to Prado’s 574.
“I was very happy to get the win the second race because I had a little clutch issue,” Herlings said. “I’m very pleased with a 1-1-1 for the first time this year.” Herlings also won his qualifying race.
Jeffrey Herlings won both MXGP motos at the Grand Prix of Lombok in Indonesia.
Tim Gajser was fourth overall in MXGP but still enjoys a comfortable points lead.
Yamaha’s Calvin Vlaanderen of the Netherlands placed third overall, and Prado of Spain placed fourth. “I just didn’t have the best feeling from the start of the weekend,” Prado said.
Swiss rider Valentin Guillod (Honda) rounded out the top five overall.
Coenen also won both motos in MX2. The Belgian beat out Germany’s Simon Laengenfelder (GasGas) in the first moto and Italy’s Andrea Adamo (KTM) in the second moto, both times by approximately five seconds.
In MX2, Lucas Coenen also won both motos for the overall win.
Laengenfelder holeshotted both motos, but the Husqvarna rider, Coenen, was on a different level Sunday. “First race was very difficult, like for everybody,” Coenen said. “The heat was high, but I could cool down quite well between the races. I did my own race in the second one, just passed [Laengenfelder] and took it easy.”
Dutch rider Mikkel Haarup, aboard the factory Triumph, was second overall with a 4-3 and Laengenfelder was third overall with 2-5. Adamo was fourth overall and The Netherlands’ Kay de Wolf (Husqvarna) was fifth overall.
De Wolf, however, still controls the championship at the top with 576 points, followed by Coenen with 527 points, and Laengenfelder with 509.CN
